Jason’s Memo
A Coffee Chat lasts about 30 to 60 minutes, so you’ll get through a dozen or so questions at most. Choose them for the person you’re meeting.
- Do your homework first: share something you’ve noticed about the industry, for example that AI is being used more and more widely, then ask how they see the next ten years playing out.
- Listen actively: don’t run through your questions one after another. Show your understanding and interest as you talk, and the conversation will feel more natural.
- Pick questions for the person: the questions are grouped into categories such as professional development, industry and role insights, and job search and career transition. Choose based on their industry and how well you know them.
Through school and my job search, whether I was working out how to switch careers or trying to learn what a specific role actually required, I kept coming back to Coffee Chats on LinkedIn with senior professionals and peers I had never met. They were how I followed what was happening in the market, found my own strengths, and learned about the less obvious challenges and demands of different jobs.
Those conversations gave me deeper insight and firsthand information, and they helped me make better-informed, more carefully considered decisions about my career path.
What makes a Coffee Chat worthwhile is asking thoughtful questions that get the other person thinking. Good questions go a long way toward helping you understand industry trends, what a role demands, and how to stand out at work.
In a Coffee Chat that lasts only half an hour to an hour, you can’t ask that many questions! Below I’ve collected questions you can draw on. Whether you’re just starting your career or you’re a professional looking to change jobs or grow further, they should give you ideas for where to take the conversation.
How to Use This List
This article lists a lot of questions that work well in a Coffee Chat, grouped by type. Decide which ones to ask first based on who you’re talking to, their industry, where they’re based, how well you know them, and so on!
A Coffee Chat usually runs 30-60 minutes, which leaves room for a dozen or so questions at most. Pick the ones that fit best and are most likely to make the other person want to share.
I’ve also highlighted the questions I use most often in yellow, so you can see what I personally like to ask in a Coffee Chat.
Pro Tip: A Coffee Chat Technique That Always Works
Preparing a list of questions matters, but a successful Coffee Chat really comes down to “showing you’ve done your homework before you ask” and focusing on “active listening”. You show your understanding and interest as you ask, so the conversation flows naturally instead of turning into a mechanical Q&A.
For example, instead of asking straight out, “How do you think this industry will develop over the next 10 years?”
try opening with: “I’ve noticed AI being used more and more widely in this industry in recent years, like the new technology Company XYZ launched… I’d love to hear your view. How do you think the industry will develop over the next ten years?”
The other person can see the effort you put in (you did your homework beforehand), the exchange goes deeper and becomes more useful, and the Coffee Chat means a lot more!
