Is SMU’s MDSE Worth It? Courses, Admissions, Costs and Careers

Updated 2026/10/16

Jason’s Memo

SMU’s MDSE is Singapore’s first master’s program that combines data science with economics. The first cohort starts in August 2026.

  • Format and cost: 18 months full-time or 30 months part-time. Tuition for 2026 is S$54,500 (about NT$1.3 million).
  • Curriculum: Python, R, SQL, machine learning and big data processing, plus applied econometrics and causal inference.
  • Admission requirements: a bachelor’s degree in any field, IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL 90 and above, plus a CV, personal statement, recommendation letters, and the GMAT/GRE or SMU’s own admission test.

Why are so many people looking at Singapore, and at SMU in particular?

If you are weighing graduate programs abroad, choosing a school comes down to more than how good the ranking looks. A few practical questions matter too:

  • Will the degree lead into an international career?
  • Is the time and tuition worth the return?
  • Is the coursework mostly theory, or can you actually use it at work?
  • How realistic is it to stay and work in Singapore after graduation?

Singapore has long been seen as a hub for finance and professional services in Asia. Among its universities, Singapore Management University (SMU) is a top choice for many students with economics, finance or data backgrounds, thanks to its strong career focus, intensive interactive teaching, and close ties to finance, policy and tech.

An introduction to SMU and its School of Economics (SOE)

SMU was founded in 2000 as Singapore’s third public university, and it has a clear focus: business, economics and the social sciences, taught in small seminar-style classes with a practical orientation, much like an American business school. It is also internationally recognized for business and finance, ranking 15th among specialist universities in the 2024 QS World University Rankings.

SMU’s School of Economics (SOE) is internationally visible in applied economics, econometrics and policy analysis. Its faculty publish in journals such as Econometrica and American EconomicReview, and the school has long been regarded as one of Asia’s leading centers for econometrics research. In Tilburg University’s Economics Schools Research Ranking (contributions from 2020 to 2024), it ranks 1st in Asia and 14th in the world for econometrics.

Want to stay and work in Singapore? Living costs, the EP work pass and COMPASS explained

When people weigh studying in Singapore, one of their main concerns is whether they can realistically stay and work there.

Based on official figures and the usual experience of international students, a year of living costs in Singapore runs about S$18,000 to 30,000. Housing is the biggest share, followed by food and transport.

Singapore also has two practical advantages:

  1. An English-speaking, high-paying market: Singapore is one of the few countries in Asia where English is the working language
  2. A relatively clear path from degree to work pass to long-term career

That is why many students from Taiwan and other Chinese-speaking regions see Singapore as a place where studying abroad connects closely to a career.

Singapore’s EP work pass and the COMPASS points framework

To work in Singapore, the main hurdle is the Employment Pass (EP). In recent years Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower (MOM) introduced COMPASS (Complementarity Assessment Framework), a points system for judging whether a foreign professional fits the needs of the market.

Why the MDSE appeals to people who want to stay

If you go back to what SMU designed the MDSE to do, you’ll see it lines up closely with the logic of COMPASS:

  • Data science × economic analysis: matches Singapore’s needs in finance, tech and policy analysis, where talent is in short supply.
  • Practical training: makes it easier to move straight into a job, since the program is not purely academic
  • SMU’s strong local employer network: relatively helpful for job hunting, internships and referrals, and SMU is one of the top-tier Category A institutions.

For many applicants, then, the MDSE is more than a master’s degree. It is a strong option for going from study to a job to a long-term career in Singapore.

Jason’s Takeaway

If you want to stay and work in Singapore after graduating, the main hurdle is the EP work pass. The MDSE combines data science with economic analysis, which matches local demand in finance, tech and policy analysis.

Next step: check whether your English scores reach an IELTS overall of 6.5 or a TOEFL of 90, and confirm against SMU’s official requirements.
