Jason’s Memo
If your English writing isn’t strong yet, you can write your SOP in this order:
- Draft in your first language: write out the full content and structure in the language you are best at (Chinese, in my case). Content is always what matters most in an application essay.
- Translate with DeepL: once the content and structure are solid, run it through DeepL to get English.
- Polish with Grammarly: use Grammarly Pro to improve sentences, cut wordiness and adjust the tone.
- Ask ChatGPT for suggestions: at the end, you can ask ChatGPT for revision suggestions. Don’t use it to write the content for you.
Today I want to introduce an English editing tool I have used for four years: Grammarly! Most current and future international students have probably heard of it. This article covers when to use Grammarly, Grammarly vs. ChatGPT, and how to combine Grammarly + DeepL + ChatGPT to write and polish your application essays efficiently!
What is Grammarly?
Grammarly is a great tool for resumes, SOPs and business emails, and with it you no longer need to pay someone to edit your writing. It is a writing assistant, and it also saves a lot of time.
When we write academic papers in English, we often run into misspelled words, grammar mistakes, misused connectives and other problems, so being able to fix them all with one click becomes urgent. Grammarly is a tool that solves exactly these problems.
Grammarly is also an AI-powered English writing and editing tool. It automatically checks your English paragraphs for spelling, grammar, punctuation and other errors, and it even suggests synonyms (so you don’t repeat the same English word), restructures sentences, switches between British and American English, and offers other advanced features.
Grammarly works smoothly across platforms and is quick to learn. There are apps for Windows, Chrome, iPhone/iPad and Android, and even a Microsoft Word add-in, so you get Grammarly’s suggestions and corrections while you write your documents and can apply them with one click!

How I use Grammarly
Here are the ways I have used Grammarly Pro most over the past four years!
Editing academic papers
This was my most common use as a student. When a professor cares a lot about mixing British and American usage, you can set Grammarly to British English or American English. It also got me through the nightmare of my 66-page undergraduate thesis, which ended up scoring 80, the highest mark in my year.
Grammarly helped enormously with my thesis! First, synonym suggestions: academic papers and formal documents are judged on whether you overuse the same word, and Grammarly kept that from happening. Second, because it has a Microsoft Word add-in, I could easily spot grammar mistakes and things to improve while editing, and fix them with one click right inside Word. That cut down a huge number of grammar, spelling and sentence-structure errors!

Writing an English resume
After graduating, Grammarly also came in handy for writing my English resume and cover letters, quickly catching wordy phrases.

You can also use Grammarly’s new AI feature, “GO”, to ask the AI for suggestions on improving your resume.

Business emails and the mobile keyboard app
Now that I’m working, I still use Grammarly on all my devices. Once you install the app on your phone, it polishes your writing as you type. Grammarly Pro gives more, and more detailed, suggestions and edits the whole text, which puts my mind at ease.

Study-abroad application essays
I saved on editing fees when I applied for my MBA: translating with DeepL and then running Grammarly gave me real peace of mind. (Further down, I explain in detail how to use these two tools to write your application essays!)
Grammarly vs. ChatGPT
Readers often ask me, “Now that ChatGPT is out, do I still need Grammarly?” Here is my own subjective view and experience, along with some objective research I found online.
First, Grammarly has launched its own AI feature, “GO”, which combines ChatGPT with the MLLMs Grammarly has been developing for 14 years. If you are editing a document in Word, you can use “GO” right there instead of copying and pasting text and switching to a browser window for ChatGPT.
While reading other people’s reviews online, I also found a paper, ChatGPT or Grammarly? Evaluating ChatGPT on Grammatical Error Correction Benchmark. Its findings come down to this: on grammatical error correction (GEC) for basic writing and editing, ChatGPT performs worse than Grammarly, especially on long sentences across a whole text, and it over-corrects more often.

Key points:
- ChatGPT is a general-purpose AI large language model. It can do basic grammar checks, but it is better suited to generating content.
- Grammarly is a specialized AI writing assistant built for anyone writing in English. It is better at editing and polishing grammar, restructuring sentences, and checking readability and plagiarism, and its feedback prompts make it easier for users to understand the changes.
- ChatGPT often over-corrects long sentences (so they no longer sound like a real person wrote them).
- Grammarly has a Word add-in, so you can do all your editing in one place and adjust each error individually.
- Grammarly’s strengths are tailoring your writing to the audience and working on every platform. Its editing quality is consistent, you can click to accept changes instead of retyping, and it suggests improvements to tone, clarity and concision.
- Answers from a ChatGPT conversation still have to be carried back into your document and adjusted by hand, while Grammarly Go works on the same page you are editing, so there is far less switching back and forth.
- Grammarly shows every suggestion and lets you accept or reject each change, and it sends a weekly report on specific grammar corrections. ChatGPT has no such option: you have to accept all its corrections at once (or adjust them one by one by hand), and if you think a change is wrong, you have to fix it in another editor.
How to combine Grammarly + DeepL + ChatGPT to write and polish application essays
Here is how I recommend writing an SOP: if your English writing isn’t very strong, draft and develop the content in Chinese first, because what matters in an application essay is always the content!
Get the content and structure right in the language you are best at, then put it through DeepL for translation.
Then use Grammarly Pro to improve the sentences, cut wordiness and adjust the tone. These tools together are really all you need. An essay written with DeepL + Grammarly comes out strong in structure, word choice and accuracy, and there’s no need to spend a lot of money on a human editor.
Finally, if you want to use ChatGPT, ask it for revision suggestions on your essay. Don’t use ChatGPT to produce the content directly!
Grammarly’s focus is on polishing language, fixing grammar and suggesting better sentence structure, and it improves the content you already wrote. ChatGPT generates content and often changes too much (as the paper above found). So for application essays, the most efficient and safest combination is Grammarly for the language and ChatGPT for ideas and suggestions about content. That way you won’t get flagged by a school for leaning too heavily on ChatGPT to generate your essay.
My experience with Grammarly
After more than 4 years, my favorite feature is probably how it helps me improve tone, add clarity and keep sentences concise. Here is my usage data: I used it almost every day over the past month!

To sum up what I’ve found from using Grammarly Pro heavily for studying abroad, work and everyday life:
- Spelling and grammar checks: Grammarly easily beats Word’s built-in spelling and grammar checker. Beyond basic grammar mistakes, it also catches more advanced issues such as word choice, flow and English sentence structure!
- Wide range of uses: it checks spelling and grammar in all kinds of situations, from resumes and SOPs to English emails and everyday English messages!
- Grammarly supports a lot of systems and platforms, and the mobile app and Microsoft Word add-in are both very practical.
- My favorite Grammarly Premium features: sentence consistency, full-sentence rewrites and word choice suggestions
These are the main reasons I have kept paying for Grammarly for four years, even longer than I’ve paid for YouTube Premium 🤣

Jason’s Takeaway
I use Grammarly to fix the language and ChatGPT for content ideas and suggestions. If you rely too much on ChatGPT to generate your essay, the school may detect it.

Next step: Write the content and structure of your SOP in Chinese first, then put it through DeepL.
