Jason’s Memo
After an interview, send a thank-you letter you actually put thought into. You can also use it to fill in any question you didn’t answer well. Write it in this order:
- Say thank you: mention something you talked about or a piece of advice they gave, so the interviewer knows you were listening.
- Follow up: if you left something out or fumbled a question, explain it properly in the letter.
- Restate your goals: stress your interest and fit, thank them again, invite any questions, and keep the whole letter short.
Why Thank-You Letters Matter in Job and School Applications
Whether you’re applying for jobs or to schools, you need to make the most of every chance to show who you are. A thank-you letter is a simple, effective way to show your appreciation, and it’s also your “last chance” after the interview to add context and leave a better impression.
A good thank-you letter can be the finishing touch on a strong interview, and it can even rescue a shaky one. It’s more than a formality. If you want it to work, the key is to build a personal connection, restate your goals, and use this last chance to fix small mistakes from the interview!
Interviewers read a lot of thank-you letters, and they can usually tell at a glance whether yours came from a template or was written with care. If you want to be remembered, work on that connection. After the interview, think about what the interviewer shared, then tie your own experiences and goals to specific details of the conversation and to what they said.
Thank-You Email Outline
- Thank them
- Refer back to your conversation to build a connection and show you listened to what they said or the advice they gave
- Add anything you forgot to mention or a question you botched (if applicable)
- Stress your interest and goals; thank them again and invite the interviewer to ask any questions

What to Write and Why
Besides thanking the interviewer, you can share something valuable you learned during the interview, and stress how much you want the opportunity and how you plan to use it to reach your goals. You can also bring up a question you didn’t answer well, or details from your conversation, especially a topic you felt went really well and that clearly impressed the interviewer.
Expand on these points with specifics, but keep it short and on topic. Explain how your experience and skills would let you shine and contribute at the school or company, and how you would grow there, to reinforce your interest in the organization. You can also say that the interview confirmed how well you fit. It doesn’t need to be long. It just needs to remind the interviewer how you did, thank them, and show you’re engaged and motivated.
Beyond being polite, a thank-you letter gives you a chance to show a positive attitude and add context. Good content can help you stand out from a pool of strong candidates and show the interviewer your unique value and potential.

FAQ
Does a thank-you letter really affect the interview outcome?
A thank-you letter gives you the biggest boost when several candidates have similar backgrounds, experience, and hard and soft skills. It shows courtesy and respect, and it gives you one more chance to present yourself. As an applicant, doing your best at every step is what lets you wait for the offer with peace of mind!
When should I send a thank-you letter?
Write a follow-up email within 1 to 2 days after the interview, ideally within 24 hours. That way your thank-you letter arrives in time, before the interviewer makes a decision or passes their notes to the next round, and adds to the impression you made.
Final Thoughts
💡 Tip: Always ask for the interviewer’s email at the end of the interview. This matters most for job interviews, where you usually won’t know the interviewer’s email or contact details beforehand.
In a job interview or anywhere else, a sincere “thank you” can carry real weight.
A simple, sincere thank-you letter shows professionalism, courtesy, and respect, and it gives you a chance to stand out from the crowd. Whatever the final result, sending one can only help you. It never hurts.
A thank-you letter was the finishing touch for me: I got my Columbia MBA offer the day after the interview! I used my thank-you letter to follow up on a question I hadn’t answered well in the interview, and I hope this story encourages more people to thank their interviewers when the moment is right. Don’t relax the minute the interview ends. Try writing a sincere thank-you letter and let it be a key that opens more doors for you.
Jason’s Takeaway
In my own thank-you letter, I followed up on a question I hadn’t answered well in the interview. The day after the interview, I got my Columbia MBA offer.
